Many board games feature brave heroes battling minions of the Cthulhu Mythos. Options like Call of Cthulhu AND Delta Green allows players to investigate strange mysteries, encounter gruesome scenes, and wrestle with their wits. The Arkham Horror Files, inspired by Fantasy Flight Games’ legendary Arkham Horror board game, are a collection of games and other media that have introduced board gamers to the Cthulhu Mythos for nearly 20 years.
The company has an extensive portfolio of Mythos-themed games including the third edition of Arkham Horror, miniature board game Madness Palace, a=and the hidden traitor game Impenetrable. They just released new extensions for Arkham Horror: The Card Game which they sent for the article. I also received an advance copy of the Arkham Horror Roleplaying Game Main Rules to review.
Arkham Horror Innsmouth Plot
Arkham Horror Card Game is an expandable card game where players build decks that represent their characters. Decks include equipment, spells, and other things that determine how the character engages with the mysteries of the Mythos. It also includes flawed cards that can arrive at the most inopportune times to get the player into more trouble while on a case.
Each expansion for the game comes in two sets of boxes. The first is the Investigator Expansion which is full of new player cards, characters and ways to modify those decks for the story. The second is the Campaign Expansion, which offers monsters, craziness, and several episodes for players to experience with different Mythos decks.
The latest release is The Innsmouth Plot which takes players out of Arkham and into the neighboring warring city of Innsmouth. A government agent has gone missing and it’s up to the players to find them. Investigators must navigate suspicious townspeople, flooded streets and unlock their memories to solve this mystery.
Fans of the Mythos will have an idea of what they’re up against if they’ve read Lovecraft’s Shadow over Innsmouth. Fans looking to battle some classic Mythos monsters will be in for a treat The Innsmouth Plot. The set is also a great follow-up for players who have completed other stories for the game.
Arkham Horror RPG
Arkham Horror fans looking to jump into RPGs were able to get it Arkham Horror RPG Start taking at Gen Con. I got my hands on an advance copy of Arkham Horror Roleplaying Game Main Rules to see what the full game looks like. The game is packed with everything players need to explore every dark corner of the city.
The game uses a simple D6 pool for resolution. Simple tasks simply require a player to spend a die out of the pool. Complex actions, such as combat and casting spells, require players to roll any wasted dice to see if they are successful.
Characters are built through a class-based system that mirrors the classes in the card game. This allows players a choice when making characters. They can either build original characters or build characters based on their favorite decks to take on new adventures.
The starter kit is available now. Arkham Horror Roleplaying Game Main Rules will be available on November 22, 2024. Arkham Mysteriesthe first adventure book for the game will be available in early 2025.
Arkham Horror Week Of Horror
The Fantasy Flight website celebrates Arkham Horror from October 24 to October 31. The company will stream games live on the website, offer fan downloads and previews of the card game’s upcoming expansion pack The drowned city. Cthulhu finally comes for Arkham in this blockbuster story and only the player stands in the way.
